When you file an application to register a trade mark, design right or patent at the Intellectual Property Office, you must include an address for service. This is the address where the IPO will write to you about your IP right. From 1 January 2021, this address must be one in the UK and can no longer be one in the EEA. Your application won’t progress until you provide a UK address. This is likely to affect companies and individuals based overseas who seek protection in the UK, or those with an extensive portfolio who use a non-UK based firm of solicitors or trade mark attorneys.
